Bike Öner is a composer and cellist from Istanbul, Turkey, based in Austin, USA. Her work explores how sound creates spaces of encounter between cultures, mediums, and timbres, blending Eastern and Western tuning systems, cross-cultural instrumental techniques, and diverse sonic identities across acoustic and electroacoustic practices.
Öner studied cello performance at Universität der Künste Berlin and Istanbul University State Conservatory, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. In 2022, she completed a Master of Music in Composition at Istanbul Technical University MIAM (Center for Advanced Studies in Music). Her works have been presented internationally at festivals, conferances and institutions such as NYCEMF, ICMC, and the International Conference on Timbre, CMMAS, CEMI, LATEX, and performed by ensembles and artists including PHACE, Hezarfen, Soundmap, IPSE, The Living Earth Show, Eliane Tokeshi, Nick Photinos, and Theo Ould.
Her research focuses on ambisonic spatial environments, microtonality, and the co-presence of performers and mediums. She brings together related yet distinct timbres to create hybrid sonic identities, and frequently works with the interaction between live and prerecorded sound, treating recordings as traces of presence that expand performance into layered spatial and temporal fields.
She is currently pursuing a DMA at the University of Texas at Austin, Butler School of Music, where she also teaches in the Experimental and Electronic Music Studios (EEMS).
